Preflight for Your Life: A Self-Awareness Exercise Inspired by AI Governance

In my AI system, there is a script called preflight.sh. Before any agent edits any file, they must run it. The script checks: is this file protected? Is this agent allowed to make this change? If not, it stops the action immediately.

No exceptions. No rationalizing. No "it is just a small fix."

What if you had a preflight check for your own life?

The AI Version

Here is what happens when an AI agent tries to edit a protected file:

  1. The agent calls preflight.sh with the file path.

  1. The script checks the UNTOUCHABLE list - 89 files that cannot be modified.

  1. If the file is on the list, it returns BLOCKED. The agent stops.

  1. If the file is PROTECTED, it returns a warning. The agent must ask for permission.

  1. The violation is logged. Every single time.

This system has caught 56 violations. Agents that would have edited core files, changed logic they should not touch, or modified boundaries that exist for a reason.

Zero bypasses. Not because the agents could not find a way around it, but because the system makes the check mandatory.

The Human Version

You have an UNTOUCHABLE list too. You just have not written it down.

Your values. Your boundaries. Your non-negotiables. The things about yourself that you refuse to compromise, even when it would be easier.

Most people know what their values are when you ask them. But in the moment - when the trigger hits, when the pressure comes - they skip the preflight. They react first and check their values later, if at all.

The Exercise: Preflight for Your Life

### Step 1: Write Your UNTOUCHABLE List

Take 10 minutes. Write down your non-negotiable boundaries. Not your preferences. Not your wishes. Your absolutes.

Examples:

  • I do not lie about who I am to make someone comfortable.

  • I do not sacrifice my health for work deadlines.

  • I do not stay silent when I see someone being mistreated.

  • I do not make promises I know I cannot keep.

  • I do not abandon my own needs to please someone else.

Keep the list to 5-7 items. If everything is non-negotiable, nothing is.

### Step 2: Run Your Preflight Before Reacting

The next time you feel triggered - someone says something that activates you, a situation pushes you toward a reaction - pause. Run your preflight.

Ask yourself:

  1. What am I about to do or say?

  1. Does this response align with my UNTOUCHABLE list?

  1. If this response were logged and reviewed tomorrow, would I stand by it?

If the answer to #2 is no, stop. Just like the AI agent stops when preflight returns BLOCKED.

### Step 3: Log the Violations

This is the part most people skip. When you catch yourself about to violate your own boundaries - or when you actually do violate them - write it down. Date. Time. What happened. What you did. What you wish you had done.

This is not journaling for therapy. This is an audit trail. Just like my AI system logs every violation, you need a record. Because patterns only become visible when you track them.

Why This Connects to the 7 Levels

This exercise lives at the intersection of Level 3 (Identity) and Level 5 (Expression).

Level 3 is knowing who you are. Your UNTOUCHABLE list is your identity made concrete - not abstract values, but specific commitments about how you show up.

Level 5 is expressing that identity in the world. Running the preflight before reacting is the practice of making sure your expression matches your identity. That the thing you are about to say or do actually reflects who you have decided to be.

The gap between Level 3 and Level 5 is where most self-awareness work lives. You know your values but your behavior does not match. Preflight closes that gap.

The Printable Version

Here is your Preflight Checklist. Print it. Put it where you will see it.

MY PREFLIGHT CHECK

Before I react, I ask:

  1. What am I about to do?

  1. Is it aligned with my values?

  1. Would I stand by this tomorrow?

  1. Am I reacting or responding?

  1. What would Level 5 me do here?

If the answer is BLOCKED - stop. Breathe. Choose a response that aligns with who you have decided to be.

MY UNTOUCHABLE LIST:

  1. _______________

  1. _______________

  1. _______________

  1. _______________

  1. _______________

Fill in your non-negotiables. Review them weekly. Update them as you grow.

The Bottom Line

AI agents need governance because without it, they drift. They make changes they should not make. They violate boundaries they should respect. They skip the pause and go straight to action.

Humans are the same. The only difference is that nobody has given you a preflight.sh yet.

Until now.
